QUEEN STREET

An ambitious programme of improvements to Queen Street was completed in autumn 2009, transforming the formerly congested thoroughfare into a shared space for vehicles and pedestrians. The transformation complements the recently redeveloped Bonn Square and New Inn Hall Street, and the proposed redevelopment of St Ebbe's Street, whilst enhancing one of the city's busiest pedestrian and shopping routes.

The work involved:

  • Relocating bus stops from Queen Street to nearby streets
  • Reducing the number of buses passing through Queen Street by around one third
  • Widening the pavements to create more space for pedestrians
  • Resurfacing pavements and the road
  • Introducing new street furniture (benches, cycle racks etc)

The improvement works were funded by the West End Partnership in conjunction with Oxfordshire County Council as part of their Transform Oxford project. The programmes share similar objectives; to achieve a high quality public space within Oxford city centre, enhancing and improving the way the public realm and the highways are used.
