WESTGATE SHOPPING CENTRE (22)

The redevelopment of the Westgate Shopping Centre and surrounding areas, such as Bonn Square, Queen Street, New Inn Hall Street and St Ebbe's Street, is a key platform of the regeneration of Oxford's West End.

The 320,000-sq ft centre has been jointly owned by Land Securities and The Crown Estate, the UK’s largest commercial landowner, since May 2010. Negotiations with Oxford City Council took place throughout 2011 on the future of the centre, and an agreement of heads of terms was reached in February 2012.

Pending approval from councillors, initial design work and public consultation on the proposed £330m redevelopment could be under way in mid-late 2012, followed by a planning application in 2013. With planning consents in place, building work could begin as soon as 2014, with an extended and refurbished centre opening in 2017.

The redeveloped shoppping centre is expected to include new homes and car parking and feature a John Lewis department store. It would also bring other major retailers to the city centre, creating as many as 2,500 jobs and attracting new visitors and shoppers.
