TOWN HALL (19)

Oxford Town Hall is a Grade II-listed Victorian building on St Aldate's, in the heart of Oxford's West End. The Town Hall was identified in the West End Area Action Plan as a possible development opportunity within the area. The historic site has been the seat of local government since a Guildhall was built there in 1292, however the current building - designed by Henry T. Hare - was opened in 1897. The Town Hall continues to play a key role in the civic life of Oxford, with regular meetings taking place in wood-panelled chambers, along with concerts, banquets and private functions.

An ambitious programme of improvements to the Town Hall, including the Gallery Suite, the Gallery Cafe, the Heritage Gift Shop and the Museum of Oxford, were instigated in late 2011. These improvements follow widespread consultation with visitors, local residents, museum staff and heritage specialists, and will lead to a great new heritage site for the city.

The Museum of Oxford relocation and improvement scheme has attracted funding of £43,600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £48,628 from Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN), which will contribute to the room conversion cost, display cabinets and interpretation planning. In the meantime there is a wide range of exhibitions and museum activities planned - click here for details.
