ST EBBE'S STREET (26)
The redevelopment of St Ebbe's Street, between Pembroke Street and Bonn Square, is a key aim of the West End regeneration, and preliminary work is in progress to assess the viability of the scheme. The proposed improvements would aim to increase pedestrian footfall, provide new street furniture, and facilitate cycle access and parking, whilst complementing the recent redevelopment of Bonn Square, Queen Street and New Inn Hall Street.
Modern Art Oxford's main entrance has recently moved to St Ebbe's Street as part of the refurbishment of the gallery, bringing new foot traffic to the area. There are also plans for the major redevelopment and refurbishment of the Westgate Shopping Centre, now in the pre-planning stages, part of which is adjacent to St Ebbe's Street. The improvement of St Ebbe's Street would help build developer confidence in the area as a viable place to invest.
As part of the preliminary work on the St Ebbe's Street redevelopment, a public consultation was held in summer 2010. Please visit our Public Consultation Diary for more information.
Also on St Ebbe's Street, the large-scale redevelopment of Pembroke College has received planning permission and is in progress - please see our Pembroke College webpage for more details. Likewise, building work is under way to develop the upper floors of the building at 28 - 31 St Ebbe's Street as student accommodation, while the 9,000 sq ft lower level was refurbished in 2010 by Oxford Leisure and opened as a bar/restaurant.
