CASTLE SITE (25)

Oxford's 'oldest new quarter', and a flagship project for the West End regeneration, the award-winning Oxford Castle boasts a history spanning over ten centuries.

This remarkable heritage site was brought to life and reopened to the public by the Queen on May 5th 2006 after a multi-million pound regeneration scheme, which saw ancient monuments and listed buildings sensitively restored and integrated with new buildings to create a buzzing and architecturally dynamic new central quarter.

This high quality development now includes Malmaison Hotel, which was crafted within the old prison walls to create uniquely atmosheric accomodation; Oxford castle Unlocked, a popular visitor attraction and education centre; O3 Gallery, which showcases the work of Oxfordshire artists; 40 residential apartments; an arts and crafts market; and a variety of cafés and restaurants. Meanwhile the dramatic backdrop of the Castle itself forms a memorable setting for outdoor opera, jazz, theatre and film performances.

Visit the Oxford Castle website for details of this remarkable regeneration programme and a full list of the events and attractions this must-see part of Oxford has to offer.

The Macclesfield House site, adjacent to the Castle Mound, is currently being redeveloped as a multi-million pound science andinnovation centre. Read the press release to find out more.
